Aaron Smail is a Canadian composer based in Toronto. His scoring credits include the queer surrealist drama Auganic, directed by Krit Komkrichwarakool, selected for the Hollyshorts Film Festival; Stay, directed by King Louie Palomo, selected for the Vancouver International Women in Film Festival; and Implanted directed by Satchel Meadow Ramraj. Aaron has recently completed scoring for the short film We The Cathedral, directed by actor Kaden Connors (Heated Rivalry).
Originally from Tsawwassen, British Columbia, Aaron grew up in a musical household where his parents—both choral singers and music educators—nurtured his passion for the arts. Piano lessons began at age 7, and Aaron later took up the trombone in middle and high school band, jazz band, and wind orchestra. Aaron pursued theatre in his post-secondary education at the University of Victoria where he performed in musicals such as The Drowsy Chaperone, contemporary dramas such as 7 Stories, and Shakespeare plays including Julius Caesar and Othello. After graduating with a BFA, Aaron scored his first short film The Settler, directed by Matt Haley, followed by a move to Toronto where he worked as an actor on several film and television productions. In 2021, he was selected for the Vancouver International Film Festival’s AMP program for film composers and rising talent. Since, Aaron has scored a variety of projects including feature-length films, short films, and commercials.
Aaron directed, produced, and hosted a podcast called “Film Music Friday” in which he shared his passion for film music and film scoring with listeners. All 10 episodes are available to listen to on streaming platforms. Aaron is also currently directing and producing a documentary short film called George’s Claim to Fame, which brings to light his 96 year-old grandfather's continuing lifelong relationship with music and song.
Aaron is an avid reader, and enjoys going to the cinema, film photography, and a good cup of tea. He lives in Toronto with his partner.

Aaron got a first-hand taste of film music when he got to play a music cue from Disney’s Atlantis live-to-picture at Disney Music Group’s studios on a band trip to Los Angeles, California in 2014. Aaron pursued theatre in his post-secondary education at the University of Victoria where he composed music for plays in addition to his acting studies. Aaron graduated with a BFA in 2020. That summer, Aaron turned to investing his time in learning all he could about film scoring and expanded his composing abilities. The stars aligned, and he scored his first short film, The Settler, directed by Matt Haley. Since, Aaron has scored a variety of projects including feature-length films, short films, and commercials. In 2021, he was selected for the Vancouver International Film Festival’s AMP program for film composers.

Aaron is also currently working on a documentary short film about his grandfather called George’s Claim to Fame.
